It is a story about Australian tech entrepreneur Paul Conyngham and his rescue dog Rosie. In 2019, Conyngham bought the Staffy-Shar Pei mix in an animal shelter. A few years after that, Rosie became ill with cancer of a violent nature. The tumour did not reduce in size despite their undergoing of costly treatment procedures like chemotherapy and surgery.With few alternatives, Conyngham had a choice to make the unusual way. Using his exposure to machine learning and data analysis, he started research on how to analyse the cancer of Rosie on a genetic basis and how to possibly create a specific treatment.
The application of AI in the analysis of the tumour.
In order to initiate the process, the tumour DNA of Rosie was sequenced by the Ramaciotti Centre of Genomics at the University of New South Wales. The sequencing was approximately 3,000 Australian dollars and enabled him to compare the healthy DNA of the dog with the tumour DNA to find out the presence of harmful mutations.After that, he relied on the AI chatbot ChatGPT to assist with the organization of the research process and the analysis of the potentially effective treatment plans. The other AI system is AlphaFold created by Google DeepMind, and it aided in predicting the behavior of mutated proteins associated with the cancer. This enabled him to find out possible targets of therapy.
The data was later utilised in collaboration with researchers based at University of New South Wales and other researchers to produce personalised mRNA vaccine specific to stimulate the immune system of Rosie to destroy the cancerous cells.
Promising early results
In December, Rosie was injected with the experimental vaccine in the first instance, with boosters administered later. One of the tumours reduced in size after the treatment according to the researchers that participated in the project, which is an indication that the method is effective.Conyngham has however indicated that he does not view the treatment as a total cure. Rather, he feels that the vaccine has assisted in increasing the quality of life of Rosie and this could have even increased the time when she will live.
