The growth in the sales of Apple Mac is due to the demanding nature of the open claw. Local computation of modern models can be very demanding and thus needs large amounts of computing power to run OpenClaw.

China is experiencing an OpenClaw mobs frenzy. The viral open-source AI agent is enjoying record success in China, and consequently, it has caused a massive demand of used Apple MacBooks in the Chinese market. The demand boom is most similar to the one witnessed during the COVID-19 pandemic lockdown.

Chinese consumers, according to ATRenew, a large Chinese retailer of second hand consumer electronics, who collaborates with Apple and JD.com, are scrambling to purchase powerful used Macs to test the OpenClaw autonomous AI agent and higher buyback offers and stable prices during the slower in-between spring season.

OpenClaw goes viral in China

OpenClaw is a free, open-source AI agent released in November 2025 by an Austrian developer, Peter Steinberger, and can autonomously complete personal tasks on your PC. OpenClaw is capable of performing duties like email, online shopping, calendar, and other workflows involving the use of digital resources.

Gaining an enormous following on its GitHub, the uptake has since rocketed in China since the beginning of March 2026, compared to usage in the United States, according to cybersecurity service provider SecurityScorecard. Chinese tech companies such as Tencent and Baidu have been an evangelist of compatible versions or integrations, which accelerates the trend among lay users and developers who are interested in raising lobsters - the playful mascot name of the tool.

The reason why MacBooks, which are now Windows, are the most preferred by OpenClaw fans.

The boom in Mac sales is due to the taxing nature of OpenClaw - it is free to download, but to use effectively, OpenClaw needs to be run on a powerful computer, particularly in local execution of complicated models. The M-series chips and more specifically the power-efficient M4 and M5 generation are more power efficient than a lot of windows-based machines and, therefore, Mac devices are the best to host the agent without using a lot of energy and heat.

To prevent security risks, many users choose to use secondary or dedicated computers as Mac Minis because OpenClaw needs a wide range of access to the system and may reveal personal information (banking data) in case of hack.

Jeremy Ji, chief strategy officer and general manager of international business at ATRenew said, "the increasing demands of the laptops, PCs in general, but of the Mac devices that the trend [to attempt OpenClaw] is the most needed. ATRenew has raised the price of MacBooks bought back as used to improve the supply during the rush, with resale values remaining at their highest point during the fall season (March through May 2026), rather than the decline during the season. According to the report, the initial sales of the new MacBooks tend to be sold at a higher rate of approximately 15 percent compared to used MacBooks in the platform though this is decreasing with the surged demand.

People are upgrading older M1 and M2 models to newer M4 or M5 models, and the Mac Mini has become a popular choice of dedicated OpenClaw systems. Ji wrote that consumer demand in more powerful secondhand MacBooks was continuing to be extremely strong and had no reason to think that this trend would die out during the year.

Although the autonomous features of OpenClaw are thrilling to the customers, security issues have caused the government of China to prohibit its use in the official computers and provide guidelines. Most of them operate it on cloud servers or isolated devices to eliminate risks.
