Revised PlayStation 5 consoles prices are to be implemented on 2 April when electronic manufacturers are under pressure of the increased costs.

Sony is increasing its prices worldwide, with the PlayStation 5 consoles selling at higher prices, in the US by a full hundred dollars, and this is the second time that the entertainment giant has been on the increase in less than twelve months as the company struggles to deal with the escalating prices of some of its components such as memory chips.

The technology industry is now in a rush to establish the artificial intelligence infrastructure, and has made memory manufacturers prefer higher-margin datacenter chips, reducing the availability of consumer-facing devices, such as those sold by Sony.

The new US prices effective 2 April will be the standard PS5 at a new price of $649.99, versus $549.99. The digital version will be sold at $599.99 dollars and the premium PS5 Pro will be sold at 899.99 dollars. The PlayStation Portal remote player will also be increased in prices to $249.99 as opposed to $199.99.

Equivalent increment will come in effect all through Europe and Japan following what the corporation termed as a cautious consideration of escalating cost pressures in the global supply chains.

The natural gas export facility of Qatar was attacked by Iran last week, making it close down, and this posed the risk of it cutting off helium, which is one of the main ingredients in the manufacture of computer chips. The US Geological Survey estimates that Qatar is the provider of one-third of global supply of helium.

This would reduce the helium exports by 14 per cent as reported last week by Qatar state-owned gas company. The result of that is reduced supply and increased prices, particularly in cases where the war takes months or even longer and analysts opined.

Although helium is familiar to most individuals in that it is the gas that causes party balloons to rise in the air, the gas is also critical in the production of semiconductors that are present in computers and other numerous technological gadgets.

The analysts have indicated that the increase in the prices of the consoles will lead to a reduction in the video-game market growth in the year. The company of Epic Games that produces Fortnite also referred to slow sales of consoles among the factors that led to the reduction of 1,000 jobs it announced earlier this week.

During the most important holiday quarter in October-December, PlayStation 5 sales in Sony dropped by 16% compared to the same figure in the previous year, reaching 8m units. The console has been available in about 6 years.

In August last year, Sony increased the prices of PS5 by approximately 50 dollars in the US. Microsoft also increased the prices of its console, the Xbox, last year.
