Indian govt could make KYC verification compulsory for online platforms: Here’s why

India may mandate KYC for social media, Dating, and gaming apps

India can soon mandate KYC based authentication on social media, dating and gaming apps in order to enhance online security.

It is possible that soon India will be able to identify users of social media apps, dating sites, and online gaming platforms using KYC. To enhance online security a group of Parliamentary Committee members have proposed that the IT and Home ministries should implement KYC-based authentication. These are proposals that were put forward in the report on 'Cyber Crimes and Cyber Safety of Women.'

When such changes are implemented, the user would have to undergo a process of KYC registration prior to logging into or creating an account on social media, dating applications, and gaming sites. The parliamentary committee proposals follow the already increasing anxieties on the safety of women and children using social media and dating applications online.

False accounts are a significant issue.

The increase in fake accounts is one of the primary causes of this committee proposal as these accounts are typically employed to harass, defraud, and impersonate.

Notably, counterfeit or uncheckable accounts facilitate cyberstalking, online harassment, distribution of non-consensual intimate images, and other forms of online abuse, particularly against women, and children who are highly vulnerable to fake account harassment efforts. The panel feels that with users attached to true identities, this abuse can be minimized. When individuals realize that they can be tracked, they will not be involved in vices so easily.

Other grave problems such as cyberstalking and sharing of private images without consent are also mentioned in the report and are commonly performed using anonymous accounts.

Tougher age checking regulations.

The panel also has emphasized the importance of age checks. It is even proposed that apps can check the age of a user during sign-up and occasionally re-check it. This is notably essential when it comes to dating and gaming apps, as underage users are subjected to harmful or inappropriate content.

Social network platforms that do not adhere to these guidelines may be penalized. It is also recommended to be more watchful with the accounts that violate the rules over and over again.

AI worsening the situation

The report notes that the threats online are getting more severe as a result of new technologies such as AI. Such devices as deepfakes, and robots are promoting evil content.

Due to this, the panel believes that tighter regulations such as verification of KYC are now required. Although these changes are supposed to enhance safety, there is an issue of privacy. Because the personal data obtained regarding users can cause issues unless it is dealt with appropriately.

It is also a concern that smaller apps might struggle to adopt such systems and that not everyone will feel at ease with exposing themselves to the Internet.

In general assuming these recommendations are adopted, it may transform the way users access internet resources such as social media applications, dating applications, and online platforms. This may well push these platforms to drop anonymous accounts in favor of verified identities.
